CHAPTER 15

Ellawyn

An uneasy feeling settled in after I’d opened the envelope. As I paced back and forth in my apartment, my heart rate skyrocketed, and it felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest. I couldn’t breathe.

Forcing myself to calm down, I walked into my studio and sat on the floor with my back leaning against the wall. Pressing my cheek to the cold wall, I closed my eyes and pictured Beckett. My focus was on him as I breathed in and back out again. When I felt like my breathing was more manageable, I opened my eyes and glanced out the window. From where I was sitting, I could see the moon, full and bright, and I found myself wishing for the same. I snapped a picture of the moon from this angle. Just as I tucked my phone away, a loud pounding blasted throughout my apartment as somebody banged on the door.

Who would be stopping by at this time of night?

The only person who even knew where I lived was Beckett. I pulled my phone out again to see if Beckett had texted about coming over, but he hadn’t.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

The knocks rang through the apartment once more, only this time, louder. It felt as if the walls were shaking from the force on the other side of the door. I stood up slowly as the pounding continued, and I carefully slipped off my sneakers and stepped into my slippers.

Sliding my feet along the wooden floor of my apartment, I made my way out of my studio and into the kitchen without making any noise. The feeling of unease intensified as I got closer to the door. I felt nauseous. I inched my way through the kitchen until I was right beside the door.

Holding my breath, I counted to ten. When the knocking subsided, I inched myself in front of the door, eye level with the peephole. Just as I lined my eye up to look through the hole, the knocking started again in the exact spot where the peephole was.

I dropped down to the ground as I tried to muffle my sobs. My mind flashed to Beckett as I considered calling him, but this wasn’t his mess to deal with. Pulling my legs to my chest, I sat balled up in front of the door for a whole hour, silently crying until the knocking stopped. When I finally got the courage to check things out, I stood and slowly lined my gaze with the peephole again.

Nothing.

I saw nothing. The hallway was empty. Whipping the door open, I looked to my left and was greeted by an empty corridor.

Rubbing my hands over my face, I turned and went into the kitchen. I grabbed a glass from the cabinet and filled it to the brim with water from the faucet. After guzzling down most of it, I dove into the medicine basket on my counter, seeking out my sleeping pill container. I popped two into my mouth, finished off my water, and set the dirty glass into the sink.
